Today we saw three major announcements from Dell at Dell Technologies World which is taking place at the Venitian Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. All of today’s announcements focused on their relationship with VMware under the heading “better together”. All of today’s announcements focused on their relationship with VMware under the heading “better together”. While VMware remains a separate company they are increasingly working closely with Dell On joint solutions. Michael Dell emphasised that this special relationship gives them key differentiation to the competition.
The first announcement focused on the Dell Technologies Unified Workspace. A coming together of hardware and services from Dell, VMware’s Workspace ONE and Secure Works. Much of this is building on already available technologies that allow Dell Clients to be preconfigured against Workspace ONE at point of order, with apps being pre-deployed before being shipped directly to the user. The result is a zero-touch deployment for IT and a quicker experience for the end user. Of course Workspace ONE then also allows for improved lifecycle management moving forward allowing true cloud-based management of the device deploying and updating enterprise applications no matter the location as well as allowing cross-device access. Further, add to this new security integrations with Dell Secure BIOS and PC as a Service style pricing from Dell financial services, and you have a truly modern and secure experience for the user and IT.
The second announcement was the Dell Technologies Cloud, no this isn’t Dell getting back into the public cloud game, this is Dell leveraging the relationships already in place with VMware but further enhancing their hybrid cloud vision by bringing a true public cloud experience, on premises. Announced today was a fully managed data center as a service solution with VxRail being the first building block, consumed on a subscription-based model with VMware monitoring and managing the infrastructure for you, right in your datacenter. Undoubtedly this is going to be a premium service with VxRail, VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware’s Services included, but for those organisations looking to consume VMware’s public cloud offerings while needing to keep workloads on premises, this could be the right solution to standardise and simplify.
The final announcement was a bit more of a surprise at least in the way it was delivered. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, joined Pat Gelsinger and Michael Dell on stage to announce not just that VMware SDDC was going to be made available through Azure, with VMware Solutions on Azure but a new closer relationship bringing together InTune, Azure Active Directory and Office 365 with VMware Workspace ONE. For me the relationship between these three companies is the Better Together story for the consumer.
