Introducing Microsoft 365 E7: The Next Frontier for Copilot

Microsoft has recently announced a new addition to its Microsoft 365 portfolio: Microsoft 365 E7, also referred to as the Frontier Suite. Set to launch on 1 May 2026, this new licence represents a significant shift in how organisations will use AI across the workplace.

For the first time, Microsoft is bringing together productivity, security, compliance, AI and agent governance into a single Microsoft 365 licence. Rather than organisations having to piece together multiple services, Microsoft 365 E7 combines Microsoft 365 productivity tools, enterprise security and compliance capabilities, Copilot AI, and a new governance layer for AI agents into one integrated platform.

The goal is to give organisations a single foundation for adopting AI at scale, while maintaining the same levels of security, visibility and control they expect across the rest of their Microsoft environment.

So what exactly is Microsoft 365 E7, and what does it mean for organisations already using Microsoft 365 today?

What is Microsoft 365 E7?

At its core, Microsoft 365 E7 brings together several key Microsoft technologies into a single platform designed to support AI at scale.

The suite combines:

  • Microsoft 365 E5 for productivity, security and compliance
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot integrated into everyday applications
  • The Microsoft Entra Suite for identity and access management
  • Agent 365, a new platform for managing and governing AI agents

Rather than introducing a completely new set of tools, Microsoft is bringing together capabilities that many organisations are already using, but with a stronger focus on enterprise AI adoption and governance.

The idea is simple: if AI is going to play a larger role in how work gets done, organisations need the right foundations in place to manage it securely and effectively.

From AI assistance to AI working alongside you

Most organisations first experience AI through tools like Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook or Teams. These tools help draft content, summarise information, analyse data and generate ideas.

Microsoft’s longer-term vision goes a step further.

Microsoft 365 E7 introduces what Microsoft describes as a “human-led, agent-operated enterprise”, where AI agents play a more active role in completing tasks and supporting workflows.

Instead of simply responding to prompts, AI agents could:

Microsoft is also evolving Copilot through the concept of Copilot “Co-work”, where AI works alongside employees more like a digital colleague than a traditional assistant.

Rather than only responding to prompts, these capabilities are designed to collaborate with users and help move work forward across projects and tasks.

If you’d like to explore this in more detail, you can learn more about Microsoft Copilot Wave 3 in our recent blog.

These agents can be built using Copilot Studio, developed with Azure AI tools, or introduced through Microsoft and partner solutions. The opportunity is significant — but it also raises important questions around governance, security and oversight.

Agent 365: bringing governance to AI agents

One of the most interesting additions in the E7 suite is Agent 365, which acts as a control layer for AI agents across the organisation. Think of it as the equivalent of identity and device management, but for AI.

Agent 365 allows IT and security teams to:

  • Detect unusual behaviour or potential security risks
  • See what agents are running in the organisation
  • Monitor how they interact with data and systems
  • Apply governance and compliance policies

It works alongside familiar Microsoft security tools such as Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview, extending those protections to AI agents as well as users. As organisations begin to deploy more AI-driven automation, having this level of oversight will become increasingly important.

Introducing Work IQ: the intelligence behind the scenes

Another key component of the new suite is Work IQ. Work IQ is essentially the intelligence layer that helps Copilot and AI agents understand how work actually happens inside an organisation. It uses signals from emails, meetings, documents and collaboration tools to build context around people, projects and priorities.

This allows AI tools to move beyond isolated prompts and instead support real workflows.

For example, an AI agent could reference a Teams meeting discussion, review supporting documents and generate a follow-up report or financial model, all while understanding the broader context of the project.

When will Microsoft 365 E7 be available?

Microsoft 365 E7 will become generally available on 1 May 2026. While full licensing details are still emerging, the new suite is clearly designed for organisations that want to move beyond small AI pilots and start embedding AI more widely across their workforce.

What this means for organisations already using Copilot

For many organisations, Copilot adoption has started with individual productivity gains. Microsoft 365 E7 reflects the next stage of that journey. The conversation is shifting from “how can AI help me write faster?” to “how can AI help the organisation work smarter?”

As AI tools become more capable, organisations will need to think carefully about governance, security, and how these technologies fit into their wider digital strategy. That’s where the right guidance can make all the difference.

How Kascade can help

Microsoft’s AI ecosystem is evolving quickly, and understanding where tools like Copilot genuinely add value can be challenging.

Wherever you are on your Copilot journey — whether you’re just starting to explore it or already enabling some licenses — Kascade can help you identify where it will deliver real impact across your organisation.

We work with organisations to assess how people actually work today, uncover where Copilot can drive meaningful productivity gains, and ensure the right governance and security foundations are in place. That means focusing on practical use cases, measuring value, and helping teams adopt AI in a way that genuinely supports their day-to-day work.

Turn Copilot potential into real business value

Understanding where Copilot will genuinely make a difference isn’t always obvious. Kascade helps organisations move beyond experimentation by identifying the right use cases, building a clear adoption strategy, and ensuring the right governance and security foundations are in place.
